Going Wild For Nuts – Prepare and Eat Acorn Pancakes and Bay Nut Truffles!
January 29th 10 AM to 2 PM. Held in Fairfax, Marin County. Cost $55
Embark on an ecological and culinary adventure into the world California Oaks and Bay Laurels to explore the web of life and our relationship within it. We will start the day preparing our wild foods and while our acorns are leaching we will head out for a nature walk to meet and identify our native trees. Perhaps we will discover other wild foods to forage and add to our feast. We finish up the day with a feast of acorn pancakes and bay nut truffles! Beginning Botany Basics, March 17th from 10 AM to 3 PM at Gathering Thyme This fun day-long course provides an introduction to wild plant identification, which is a valuable skill  for many nature lovers, herbalists and wild food foragers. Deep Herbology – Meetings with Remarkable Herbs

Deep Herbology: Wisdom of the ELDER - Wednesday, September 7th • 7:00 to 9:30pm. Rich in medicine, steeped in mythology, Elder opens the garden gate to series in Deep Herbology with Cheryl Fromholzer, Jolie Lonner Egert and Catherine Abby Rich. Modern science reaffirms the long standing traditional use of Elder as a prominent cold and flu remedy and a fine cosmetic herb. We will explore the rich traditions, myths and science of this remarkable plant. Learn to make herbal syrups. The genus name “Symphytum” means “grown together”. This herb has been used for centuries to heal wounds and knit bones. It’s so good at cellular regeneration, that legend has it that Comfrey baths were given to women before marriage to restore the hymen. Whether you’re an herbal virgin or lifelong plant lover, we invite you to come together to explore Comfrey’s medicine, mythology and controversy. From digestive bitter to dreamer’s oracle, Mugwort reveals many aspects of herbalism from the medical to the metaphysical. Delve deep into your inner wild as we journey into the many uses and stories of magical Mugwort, our native Artemisia. Bring home mugwort goodies we’ve made in class.Class will be held at Gathering Thyme. Oak Ecology and Acorn Food Playshop

Take for an ecological and culinary adventure into world of oaks and acorn food – the original California cuisine. This fun and educational playshop will explore California’s oak habitats and the rich web of life they support. For thousands of years, humans have been an integral part this web of life as acorns were a staple food for a most Native Californians. Crack and grind acorns yourself, and learn how you can make delicious acorn flour. Yummy baked goods made from acorns will be available to sample too!Read more about Oak Classes

Botany For Herbalists and Other Plant Lovers
This course provides an introduction to wild plant identification, which is a valuable skill for many nature lovers, herbalists and wild food foragers. When you begin to see plants through the eyes of a botanist the intricate beauty of nature comes to life! It is very rewarding to gather food and medicines from the wild and in order to safely and ecologically harvest wild plants it is imperative to identify the plant correctly. This fun course is designed to introduce students to the necessary skills and knowledge to positively identify and use wild medicinal plants. This course is open to anyone. Herbal training is not required.

Topics covered include:

  • •Understanding plant parts and descriptions.
  • •Overview of botanical classification and groupings such as the families and genera.
  • •Distinguishing characteristics of important medicinal plant families.
  • •Botanical guides and keys.
  • •Ethical wildcrafting.

No experience or prerequisite required.


Monthly Marin County Herb Walks with Ethnobotanist Jolie Egert and Clinical Herbalist Cheryl Fromholzer

Interested in learning more about the abundance of medicinal plants that grow in your own backyard? Want to learn more about how to identify wild foods? Join us for a fun-filled educational hikes on some of Marin County’s most beautiful trails. We’ll discuss how native peoples used these plants for food, shelter and medicine, and how they are used by herbalists today. We’ll talk about how to identify plants and what distinguishes medicinals and edibles from their poisonous cousins. This class is for people of all ages. Families welcome. The pace is slow and the walk is very easy.

We’ll meet at Gathering Thyme at 9:45am sharp and carpool to the trailhead. Contact us for more information and to register.

Info on Cheryl: Cheryl Fromholzer is a Clinical Herbalist and Herbal Educator as well as the co-founder of Gathering Thyme and the formulator for the vegan skin care line “North Rose Botanicals”. Her passion is teaching people how to use herbal medicine in their everyday lives. She offers free 30 minute consultations at Gathering Thyme and provides custom herbal formulas for customers and clients.

Botanical Medicine of the Sierras with Ethnobotanist Jolie Egert and Clinical Herbalist Cheryl Fromholzer. August 4-7 2011
Join Clinical Herbalist Cheryl Fromholzer and Ethnobotanist Jolie Egert for a joy filled botanical journey into the Sierras. Take a long weekend adventure into the healing plants of the Sierra Mountains to learn the basics of herbal medicine and botanical identification.

On this camping trip we will take leisurely day hikes from our car-accessible base camp  to discover some of California’s most beautiful plants and best herbal medicines like arnica, valerian, aconite and osha.

Morning and evening programs will include herbal medicine making, plant identification, making an herbal first aid kit, connecting with plants through plant spirit journeying. Each day we’ll have ample free time where participants are encouraged to relax, reconnect to nature and soak in the gorgeous wild. We request that participants approach the class with a community spirit, inspired mind and open heart.

Logistics: We will be car camping at a campground in the Sierra. Students will need to supply their own camping gear.  We will have a group kitchen and everyone will all be responsible for one community meal (please let us know of any diet restrictions prior to the trip).   For more information

Pre-registration is required with a non-refundable deposit of $100 to guarantee your space.  The balance is due July 21st. The entire trip cost is $495. Sign up before July 4th and save $50 for a total fee of $445.
