Beginning Botany and Plant ID
March 15, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Immerse yourself in the gorgeous spring bloom of Point Reyes and see the intricate beauty of flowers through the eyes of a botanist. Learn the basics needed to begin identifying wild plants including flower anatomy, terminology, plant family characteristics, online botanical resources and much more. We’ll begin with a classroom talk about how plants are classified and the anatomy needed for identification. After lunch we take a walk down a gorgeous wildflower covered trail and take time to fully see and identify the plants around us. We will learn to use basic botanical keys in the field and start to recognize the floral patterns of major plant families. In addition to our primary focus on botany for beginners, students will introduced to the ethnobotany of the area and some top notch wild foods and medicines of Point Reyes National Seashore.
