Do you want to know the plants growing around you this spring? Then come join Jolie Egert Elan and learn to see the world through the eyes of a botanist. We will slow down to look at the intricate details of flowers and plants and immerse ourselves in the spring bloom. Botanists categorize plants into families based on the structure of their flowers. Plants belonging to the same botanical family often have similar nutritional, medicinal or poisonous qualities. This class is designed to introduce students to the necessary skills and knowledge to positively identify and use wild medicinal and edible plants.
Students will learn to recognize major plant families of California and build a foundation necessary to identify plants on their own. The basics of ethical wildcrafting will be discussed. During this fun-field trip we will explore the magnificent flora of Marin County. Please bring a magnifying glass or loupe if you have one. Topics covered include:
Understanding plant parts and descriptions.
Overview of botanical classification and groupings such as the families and genera.
Distinguishing characteristics of important medicinal plant families.
Botanical guides and keys.
